Born in Kobe, Japan, Yukiko Nakamura was first introduced to mbira music in 1991 by David Schaldach when she was ESL student in San Francisco. In 1999 she traveled to Zimbabwe, learning mbira and the construction of the instrument from Fradreck Mujuru for four months. During that time she also studied with Chris Gatsi and Sekuru Gora and attended mbira ceremonies in Mondoro. Yuki continued her study of mbira at Erica Azim’s mbira camp in Berkeley, California in 2001, 2004, and 2005, the latter camp featuring Tute Chigamba.

In 2004 Yuki published the Mbira Score Book with help of Kyoko Imai who had studied with Chris Gatsi 1996-97.

In 2006 she performed on Sakaki Mango’s solo CD Limba Train. The next year she spent three months traveling in Zimbabwe, studying hosho and mbira from Tonderai Piri of Mawungira Enharira as well as from Rinos Simboti, Luken Pasipamire, and Cosmas Magaya. She also began learning Garikai’s mbira style. She performed live at the Book Cafe in Harare with members of Bongo Love and with Tonderai Ndava of Mawungira Enharira who is her favorite mbira player now.
