Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited

Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited

Of all the Zimbabwean musicians who have performed abroad, Thomas Mapfumo has perhaps been the most successful at bringing chimurenga to the world’s attention. Chimurenga – traditional Zimbabwean mbira music set to electric instruments that was the voice of the struggle for independence in the 1970’s – uses electric guitars to play mbira parts and drum kits for hosho. The Blacks Unlimited combine both the traditional and the modern instruments, along with dynamite vocals, in an irresistible groove.

One of Mapfumo’s very best albums, featuring his trademark mix of mbira, electric guitars, horns, and drums, with a chorus of women’s voices backing up his own rough, mesmerizing vocals.
