Tatenda Youth Marimba Ensemble

Tatenda Youth Marimba Ensemble

Tatenda Youth Marimba Ensemble is a group of teens who worked hard with Peter Swing, their musical director and teacher for six years. This CD is the result and reward of their work together and demonstrates both the youths’ enthusiasm for the music and Peter’s knowledge of marimba & mbira music from Zimbabwe. While these original band members have now moved on, the band Tatenda still lives on in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, where youth and marimba thrive together.

This is a fine example of a youth marimba band achieving a quality of performance easily on the same level of quality as their elders. Tatenda’s marimba playing is accurate and lively, and they handle interlocking mbira rhythms well. One of the group’s strong points is their singing, strong and stirring, particularly on Chiro Chacho. Hats off to these great kids and their teacher, Peter Swing.
