Hlabalela Ensemble

The Hlabalela Ensemble hails from Thembisa, a township east of Johannesburg. Traditionally music of this type is performed under the stars during the long hot summer nights. The choir gathers around a fire, surrounded by nature in the early evening, begin to sing around midnight, and evoke the attention of the ancestors until the dawn’s early light the next morning.
