Originally a student of Karl Stockhausen’s, South African composer Kevin Volans broke from the European school of modern music and returned to Africa to imbue his work with more of the roots of African music. He composes primarily for small ensembles of European instruments; the Kronos Quartet has recorded some of his work. Today he resides in Ireland.

Amid this modern music for string quartet sits “Mbira,” an arrangement of the ancient Shona mbira song Nyamaropa performed here on two harpsichords and hosho. This track can also be found on the compilation Mbira: Zimbabwe (see Various Artists).
