MUJURU: THE SPIRIT LIVES ON
A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO EPHAT MUJURU AT BOOK CAFÉ

James Mujuru, son the late legendary mbira maestro Ephat, will present a musical tribute to his father, to include the posthumous launch of Ephat's last CD: Journey of the Spirit", at Book Café on Wednesday 26 February @ 6:30pm. To mark the occasion, outstanding visual artist Victor Mavedzenge will present an exhibition of portraits of Ephat.

James Mujuru has played mbira from the age of 12, including complete tunes such as Nyamaropa and he is rapidly developing into an accomplished and recognised mbira player. He is certainly amongst the top young mbira performers in the country. He began as a young boy, by accompanying his father on hosho, an activity that takes strength and concentration. His musical ideas were shaped by listening to his father, and he has a huge repertoire of melodies and rhythmic expressions he has adapted from Ephat. Ephat's last CD, to be launched on this occasion, represents some of the new musical directions Ephat was taking at that time with strong cross-cultural influences such as reggae and rhumba.

James feels the spirit of his father when he plays his own music and believes strongly that Ephat Mujuru's lasting legacy was one of "peace", in his music, his actions and his story-telling. James has continued in his father steps by forming the band - MUJURU SPIRIT OF THE PEOPLE ENSEMBLE "MUSOPE" - a vibrant young mbira group currently doing shows and working on recording. James also teaches and makes mbiras.

Victor Mavedzenge who will be presenting his art, is a dynamic poet and visual artist, well-known in artistic circles in Harare, who has thrilled audiences for some years under the stage name "Lucius", a live-literature poet.

This is an important event in Harare's cultural calendar and all are urged to support the development of arts and artists by attending.
